Coverage of mystery novels and authors who write them is widespread in print as well as on the internet. One can find listings of the most current novels available as well as critiques. There are prestigious awards given annually to the writers most proclaimed, i.e., The Edgar Awards, the Raven Awards and the Macavity Award.
Though it may not be widely known, Edgar Allan Poe published the first mystery novel in 1841 which was entitled “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” Thus began the interest in mystery writings. Since that time, mystery novels have only been outsold by novels of romance, which is a strong indicator of their popularity.
An organization called the “Mystery Writers of America” was formed that dedicates its efforts toward promoting the appreciation of crime writing and works through various venues such as publishers. Membership in this organization is open to anyone. It is this group that selects writers annually eligible for the Edgar Awards.
While the Edgar Award is presented to writers, the Raven Awards are presented in various categories and honor those dedicated to furthering the promotion of the mystery genre in any way.
