Elvis Cole, private eye, is the creation of author Robert Crais. He is the main character, along with his partner, Joe Pike, in a series of mystery novels. Elvis is a former Army Ranger who worked as a security guard before opening up his own agency. His office has a fair amount of Disney memorabilia in it, including a Mickey Mouse phone and wall clock. He drives a yellow 1966 Corvette, wears Hawaiian shirts and carries a Dan Wesson .38 revolver in a shoulder holster. His office is in Los Angeles on Santa Monica Boulevard.
Elvis is a straight shooter, trying to do the right thing. He bills himself as “The World's Greatest Detective” and tends towards wisecracks and smart remarks when dealing with other people. He lives in an A-Frame house with an ornery black cat who has a torn ear. The cat hates everyone except Joe Pike, whom he adores. Elvis Cole's house has a large back deck, where he does his morning and evening yoga and Tai Chi exercises and where he often sits to “contemplate the universe” with a beer.
Elvis Cole brings to mind Robert Spenser and Philip Marlowe as like-minded contemporaries. They all have a soft spot for a damsel in distress, and they all are a little hard-boiled, but chivalrous. They all work with a bigger, tougher partner, and they all are magnetic to women. Elvis Cole has appeared in 11 novels by Crais as the main character. The most current Robert Crais novel, Chasing Darkness, features Cole's partner, Joe Pike, as the main character.
